IE Alumni Gather in Medellin to celebrate Social Innovation

Written by: Conchita Galdón, Director of Social Innovation Center@IE Social Innovation.

On October 18th and 19th, Alumni from all over the world came together in Medellin to discuss the role of Social Innovation in building a greater tomorrow.  It was incredibly inspiring to see so much energy and passion from our community devoted to social innovation and sustainability. I am always proud of being IE, but there are special moments, such as AW Medellin 2019, when this pride is especially intense. What an amazing community we are!

The weekend started with a networking dinner at the Modern Art Museum of Medellin (amazing views!). The next morning, we gathered in Medellin’s Botanic Garden in their outdoors Orquideoram, where we spent the day debating, learning and connecting. In the morning, we introduced our Alumni to the IE’s Center for Social Innovation and IE’s efforts to advance the UN’s 2030 agenda. Later, Andy Stalman and a panel of speakers discussed the new role of brand values in the era of transparency, when greenwashing is not an option anymore. Following this debate, Ignacio Villoch introduced us to the role of new technologies in driving social innovation and moderated a panel with social entrepreneurs. After lunch, Alumni participated in a structured networking event where they met fellow alumni in affinity groups. Finally, the event wrapped up with a discussion on social impact finance, led by Fabiana Feld, IFC’s Chief Financial Officer.

We could not have found a better place to celebrate this Alumni Weekend. The city of Medellin perfectly represents people’s ability to turn around their context. Formerly damaged by guerrilla and narco, today, Medellin is bursting with innovation and entrepreneurship with a social and environmental focus. This complete turnover was possible thanks to efforts by the government, private sector and civil society jointly. Collaboration, big goals, a greater purpose. The very topics speakers put forth during this very inspiring weekend.
