21 May Fashion Revolution Week 2019
Written by: Genevieve Burke, Event coordinator, Net Impact Club
On Friday 26th of April Social Innovation Center@IE celebrated Fashion Revolution Week in collaboration with Net Impact Club by hosting a panel discussion followed by an overview of the fashion transparency index and then a DIY workshop, clothing exchange and mingling!
The theme of the evening was promoting sustainable fashion. To address this was a selection of knowledgeable panellists: Carlos de Sandoval, head of supply chain at HEMPER; Totti Könnölä of INNOGREEN; Carlos Ferrando, CEO of CLOSCA and Cruces founder of CRUCA. The discussion was informative and insightful and touched on a variety of important topics including why it is important we all get involved in the revolutionising the second most polluting industry in the world: the fashion industry!
After the discussions, Andreyna from Trendy&Green hosted a revamp session where participants added embellishments to their tired clothes.
Jessica from BGaia gave guests the opportunity to bring along items of clothing to swap with each other. So many pieces were given new homes.
Meanwhile, there was also the opportunity to mingle with the panellists and each other and check out some sustainable fashion pieces such as Closca’s bike helmets and water bottles.
As a takeaway, here are some ways we can all try to be more sustainable when shopping for fashion:
– Think before you buy and buy clothes you absolutely need.
– Consult the fashion transparency index when making purchase decisions.
– Buy local made and sold. Online shopping ends up costing the planet in emissions from the transport.
– Give your clothes a new life in a new home: host a clothing exchange with your friends or coworkers!
Let’s continue to revolutionise fashion!
