Digital marketing and e-commerce campaign for local artisans

Author: Anakaren Gomez, MVDM Student

Walking into our Digital Marketing class one day, we noticed something was different. Our professor was accompanied by several executively dressed professionals at the front of the classroom. Piquing our curiosity, we took our seats and waited for our professor to speak.

He soon explained that our class would be participating in an initiative with IE’s Máster in Visual  and Digital Media program, in which we would strategize and execute a digital marketing and e-commerce campaign for local artisans. We were thrilled! This is exactly what IE is about… giving us the opportunity to implement classroom learning in a real-world business. We could not have asked for a more exciting project.

My team was matched with Sonia Trenado, an interior designer from Sevilla, who recently moved to Madrid with the hopes of starting her own business of hand-made interior decorations and furniture restoration. She welcomed us into her studio, which was really the living room of her apartment, and immediately we saw her passion, creativity, and ambition. Her love for what she does was contagious, and even though none of my group members, nor I, had experience in this before, we were inspired to succeed for her.

Though it was a challenging and demanding project because of time constraints, it is also one of my fondest memories from my time at IE. It was because of this opportunity that we were able to try our hand at digital marketing in a real, authentic way. There were times when we invested money in the wrong types of campaigns, and we were distraught. However, we learned from that and every decision we made was fueled by our knowledge of trial-and-error and by combining everything we had learned in all of our courses at IE.

Besides being truly satisfying as a student seeing how educational theory applies to daily life, it was even more satisfying as a person helping someone become a step closer to achieving their dreams.
